Hi there,
Happy Monday!
Here’s your weekly dose of The Monday 3: a quote, an insight and an action I’m taking.

A quote I’m pondering
I am not such a hypocrite as to offer cures while I am sick myself. No, I am lying in the same ward, as it were, conversing with you about our common ailment and sharing remedies. So listen to me as if I were talking to myself: I am letting you into my private room and giving myself instructions while you are standing by.

An insight
As you might imagine, in refugee camps there is very little within your control and very little that can be done about the circumstances around you. The constraints are immense.
A program was developed with the World Health Organisation in 2020 to introduce psychological flexibility (using the core framework of Acceptance and Commitment Training) to a camp.
The Lancet reported it to be effective in reducing psychological distress for participants immediately and in a sustained manner over more than 3 months.
Psychological flexibility helped refugees to recognise what was and wasn’t within their control. It helped them acknowledge those constraints and suffering and still take values-based action on a daily basis.
What constraints are you facing and how are you taking values based actions in those conditions?
An action I’m taking
I review each year for myself and my clients. It helps crystallise the lessons learned at the end of a year while the fatigue and “rawness” is with us. It helps create a sense of closure.
As well as taking notes, we review the calendar week by week to refresh our memories of what has happened throughout the year.
I do this across multiple categories: Family relationships (other than intimate or parenting), Intimate relationships, Parenting, Friends/social life, Work, Finances, Education/training, Recreation/fun, Spirituality, Citizenship/community Life, Physical self care (diet, exercise, sleep etc), Environmental issues.
For each I ask myself 3 questions:
- What worked well?
- What could be improved?
- What might I do differently?

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions whether that’s a favourite quote or something else.
I hope you have a great week ahead.
With love,
Toby
