Hi there,

A quote I’m pondering

Preparing to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Scheduling time to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Making a to-do list for the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Telling people you’re going to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Writing a banger tweet about how you’re going to do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Hating on yourself for not doing the thing isn’t doing the thing. Hating on other people who have done the thing isn’t doing the thing. Hating on the obstacles in the way of doing the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Fantasizing about all of the adoration you’ll receive once you do the thing isn’t doing the thing.

Reading about how to do the thing isn’t doing the thing. Reading about how other people did the thing isn’t doing the thing. Reading this essay isn’t doing the thing.

The only thing that is doing the thing is doing the thing.

An insight from conversation

Often, after years of practice, we develop deep competence in working with discomfort in one area of our lives. The opportunity is to transfer that competence to a new area where we feel less comfortable, less confident.

In order to do that, we need to understand that:

  1. We’re at the bottom of a new learning curve and approach it accordingly.
  2. We’ll need to follow a process and plan to test and experiment.
  3. We need to let go of our expectations of immediate results.
  4. We need enough time to compound the effect of new action into results.

An action I’m taking

To make my phone less attractive, I’ve applied the greyscale filter in my accessibility settings.

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions whether that’s a favourite quote or something else.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

With love,

Toby
