The Monday 3: We don’t learn from experience, 3 Reflection questions, Rite of passage for my 8 yr old daughter

Hi there,

Happy Monday!

Here is your weekly dose of The Monday 3: a quote, an insight and an action from the last week.

Please share this with one person who might find it useful.

A quote I’m reflecting on

“We don’t learn from experience, we learn from reflection on experience.”

John Dewey (American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer.)

An insight

Reflection can be hard if we start with a blank page. Here are some questions that help to get started.

  1. What worked? Why?
  2. What didn’t work? Why?
  3. What did I learn?

An action

My favourite action last week was taking my daughter Heidi on an 8km walk as a rite of passage for her 8th birthday. Luce and I split the walk because we both wanted 1:1 time with her. Heids chose a frozen yoghurt place to celebrate with her sisters at the end. The whole thing was a great experience.

As we were walking I asked her what her favourite part of her 8 years had been and she picked our trip to Switzerland last year.

I then asked her what the hardest thing had been through her 8 years. She was silent for a while. I thought we might be going deep. Then she turned to me and said: “Dad – I think I’ll have the salted butterscotch flavour when we get to the shop.”

Geez it made me laugh. A good reminder stay in the moment and lighten up!

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions too.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

With love,
