Hi there,

Happy Monday!

Here’s your weekly dose of The Monday 3: a quote, an insight and an action I’m taking.

__

A quote I’m pondering

If a large diamond is cut up into pieces, it immediately loses its value as a whole; or if an army is scattered or divided into small bodies, it loses all its power; and in the same way a great intellect has no more power than an ordinary one as soon as it is interrupted, disturbed, distracted, or diverted.

Arthur Schopenhauer – German Philosopher 1788-1860

An insight

If we were coming into harbour in a storm, why would we drop anchor? The idea of the anchor is to steady the ship, not stop the storm.

This same concept can be applied to our own personal storms.

Instead of trying to change the storm, we can “drop anchor” using the ACE technique developed by Dr Russ Harris.

A – Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. What are they? What do they feel like? Where do you feel them?

C – Connect to your body. Move your arms, legs, hands, stretch. Notice your ability to control your body even while experiencing the thoughts above.

E – Engage in the world around you. What can you see, hear, smell?

(If you really want to notice the impact of this, give yourself a score out of 10 for your level of vitality before the exercise and then another score afterwards. Is there a difference?)

An action I’m taking

Your leg or your life? For a true story about performance in pressure situations, I loved this rescue operation in Tasmania captured by Australian Story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMa-Lqxfzqk (1 hr)

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions whether that’s a favourite quote or something else.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

With love,

Toby
