Hi there,
Happy Monday!
It’s Remembrance Day, so I’ll be taking a minute at 11am.
Here is your weekly dose of The Monday 3: a quote, an insight and an action I’m taking.
If you have a friend or colleague who might enjoy these, I’d love you to share this newsletter with them. They can sign up here >>

A quote I’m pondering
“Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.”
William Bruce Cameron
An insight from conversation
If you want to change, to begin with change nothing. First observe and find what is already there.
Because the simple act of observation itself has an impact on behaviour.
In psychology and social sciences it has been named the *Hawthorne Effect (aka Observer Effect)*. Studies conducted in the 1920s and 30s to improve productivity at the Hawthorne Works factory in Chicago made various changes to conditions but realised that all changes improved productivity in the short term.
They concluded that the productivity increases could be ascribed to the sense of increased attention and importance that came with people simply knowing they were being observed.
The Hawthorne Effect is an interesting one to harness if you’re considering making change. While we don’t have to count everything, finding some way to bring repeated attention and feedback to an area I’m trying to improve can be useful.
I’ve used it most recently to help me reduce my consumption of processed foods. I’m keeping notes in a food and mood journal to raise my own awareness of what is going in and how it makes me feel. Then a friend of mine helps me review it regularly to increase my sense of accountability and commitment.
An action I’m taking
Sometimes making an action completely invisible can help. I’ve started using Stripe’s Climate Commitment feature so that I make smaller donations from my business as invoices are paid online. I don’t see it, I don’t feel it, most of the time I forget I’m evening doing it, but the contribution happens.

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions too.
I hope you have a great week ahead.
With love,
