A quote I’m pondering
The virtue of a person is measured not by his outstanding efforts but by his everyday behaviour.
Blaise Pascal – French mathematician and physicist
An insight from conversation
Environment matters. When trying to solve a problem in the present, consider a time when that problem (or one similar) has been solved in the past.
What specific elements in the environment made it easier? What supported the success? How could they be applied again in this new context?
For example, a client of mine had success in the past using group training environments to get fit. He was able to apply that insight by setting up a group fitness challenge in his company for the accountability, support, fun and engagement.
Might seem basic, but so often we overlook the environments closest to us to help make the changes we want.
An action I’m taking
When someone wants my help and shares some context, instead of giving advice, I’ve been asking this specific sequence of 5 questions. I was sceptical at first, but I’ve seen people discover remarkable clarity for themselves quickly. I will definitely be using them more often.
- What is the real challenge here?
- And what else?
- And what else?
- What do you think the real challenge is now?
- What do you want to do about it?
Thanks to Michael Bungay Stanier for the questions. You can find them here in his TED Talk titled: How to tame your Advice Monster

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions too.
I hope you have a great week ahead.
With love,
