The Monday 3: A right to our actions, Invisible increments, My food and mood diary

Hi there,

Happy Monday!

Here is your weekly dose of The Monday 3: a quote, an insight and an action I’m taking.

I’m always working to grow my newsletter, so if there’s someone you think might enjoy these, I’d love you to share this with them. They can sign up here >>

A quote I’m pondering

You have a right to your actions, but never to your actions’ fruits. Act for the action’s sake. And do not be attached to inaction. Self-possessed, resolute, act without any thoughts of results, open to success or failure.

Bhagavad Gita

An insight from conversation

Acting for the action’s sake is quite common. Sometimes I phrase this idea as “acting without expectation of results”.

Health is a classic example.

As I’m trying to build strength in the gym, I must do every repetition. But after no single rep do I see a result. Each rep is an invisible increment in developing the strength. Only after taking the action time and time again can I look back and see the progress I’ve made or the result that has happened.

On any learning curve or change I’m trying to make this is true. The line between where I am now and where I would like to be is never a straight one, so clarifying the action I need to repeatedly take is critical.

As well as the action, being clear on the motivation, the internal hooks that hold us back, the plan, the toolkit, the environment, the support, the accountability, are all important to taking that first step and then maintaining it through inevitable set backs.

An action I’m taking

I’m trying to tweak some food habits at the moment (particularly my sweet tooth). An action I’m taking is to keep track of patterns using my food and mood diary. (It’s a google spreadsheet so you can make a copy of the structure.) It’s imperfect, it’s early days and I’m not completing all of it as much as I should, but it’s a start. Sharing this with you feels deeply uncomfortable but also dramatically dials up my accountability… I’d better walk my talk.

Is there one of these that really stood out for you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or suggestions too.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

With love,

Toby
